COMMON POINT DEFINITION

Illustration

A common point is a protrusion of antler which is not less than one inch in length and whose length is greater than the width of its base.

PALMATED POINT DEFINITION

Illustration

Where a palmated point has a baseline wider than the length of the point, measure the width of the point (90 degrees to the centerline of the point) one inch from its tip, and if at that location the length is greater than the width, the point is legaland shall be measured from tip to baseline.

DEFINITION OF A TYPICAL POINT

Illustration

A point which rises in a vertical attitude from the main beam in a typical fashion shall be considered a typical point. There is no limit to the number of typical tines which may occur. The typical points are shaded in the above illustration and indicated by the letter "P" (P = typical point).

DEFINITION OF AN IRREGULAR POINT

Illustration

Any point which grows from the main beam or from other points and which does not conform to the definition of a typical point shall be considered irregular. In many cases, an irregular point may grow from a typical point or from another irregular point. The shaded points in this illustration are noted by the abbreviation "IRR" for irregular.

Scorers will ultimately encounter points which demand interpretation. Some points grow in a typical fashion but from locations on a rack where typical points do not normally occur. In such cases the best interpretation of one side of a rack may be accomplished by comparing it to the opposite side. The rack will usually interpret itself in such cases.

"RULE OF THUMB" FOR DETERMINING TYPICAL POINTS

The rule of thumb for the determination of a typical point can be summed up by applying this question to the point in question: Where do most typical points appear on most whitetail racks most of the time? Points may occur which conform to the typical point definition but are not located where most typical points appear on most whitetail racks most of the time. In such instances, even though the point in question may rise in a vertical attitude from the main beam, it may still be regarded as irregular because it does not meet the typical point rule of thumb criteria.
